Cabled once and backed up again: signs the pipe wall is the problem
Same drain, same clog
A cable can open a channel through a clog and leave the coating behind. Water slows down again within weeks, sometimes days.
Slow everywhere, never stopped
Every fixture drains, just badly. That pattern points to a main line narrowed by grease or scale and not to one plug.
Gurgling and sewer odor
Air pushed back through traps means water has a hard time getting past a restriction in the line.
Backups after laundry or a full dishwasher
A big slug of water exposes a narrowed main. The floor drain is usually the first place it shows.
What a hydro jetter does that a cable cannot
A hydro jetter pumps water through a hose with a nozzle that fires jets forward to break a clog and backward to pull the hose along the pipe. The spray strips the wall all the way around, which is the part a cable misses. A camera pass before or after confirms what was cleaned.
Drain cable
- Fast for a single soft clog
- Cuts a channel through the middle
- Can leave grease on the wall
- Good first step for one slow fixture
Hydro jetter
- Cleans the full circle of the pipe
- Flushes debris down to the sewer
- Handles grease, scale and root hairs
- Best for repeat clogs and main lines
Sewage coming up tonight: jetting after hours
Dispatch handles jetting calls on nights, weekends and holidays, with same-day appointments when a crew is free. A backup into a tub, shower or basement floor drain is the kind of call that should not wait for Monday. Use the time before the truck arrives to prepare the work area.
Before the jetter arrives
Stop every drip
Water you add reaches the same blocked line. Hold off on showers, laundry and the dishwasher.
Clear a path to the cleanout
Move boxes and storage away from the basement cleanout or the access point outside the house.
Keep people and pets away
Backed-up water carries bacteria. Keep children and pets off wet floors and use gloves if you must touch anything.
Photograph the water line
Pictures of the mess help with an insurance claim and show the plumber how high it rose.
When jetting is the wrong tool
A camera comes before high pressure on a damaged pipe
Water pressure cannot repair a cracked, offset or collapsed pipe, and aimed at a weak spot it can make the damage worse. A plumber who runs a camera first knows whether the pipe can take the spray. If the camera shows a break, the next step is sewer line repair, and jetting waits until the line is sound.
Cable did not hold?
Describe what you have already tried. Dispatch books the right equipment and a same-day visit when a crew is available.
Where jetting fits in Farmington houses and shops
Farmington has 11,837 housing units, and Census Bureau ACS estimates for 2020 to 2024 show 6,008 of them were built in 1980 or later. Many of those homes have plastic drain lines that clean well with a jetter. The 2,910 units built before 1960 are more likely to have older pipe, and that is where a camera check earns its place before any pressure goes in.
Restaurants and other food businesses build up grease in their lines faster than a house does. Jetting is a common answer there, along with a regular grease schedule. Our commercial plumbing page covers business drain work.
| Situation | Jetting fit | What the plumber checks first |
|---|---|---|
| Grease buildup in a kitchen branch or main | Strong fit | Where the grease starts, and whether a sag holds it |
| Root hairs entering a joint | Good fit as a cleaning step | Camera for the entry point, then a plan to stop regrowth |
| Scale in older iron pipe | Fit only if the wall is sound | Pipe condition and wall thickness on camera |
| Cracked, offset or collapsed section | Not a fit | Camera, then sewer inspection results guide the repair |
What shapes the cost of hydro jetting
Jetting is priced by the job. These are the factors that move a quote up or down.
