How to describe your problem to dispatch
A few details in the first minute help dispatch send the right plumber with the right tools. You do not need plumbing words. Plain description works.
Say where the water is
Name the room and the fixture. A leak under the kitchen sink is different from water coming through the basement ceiling.
Say what changed
Did it start suddenly or build up slowly? A sudden gush, a gurgle after flushing or a cold shower all point in different directions.
Say whether you can stop it
Tell dispatch if you shut off the main valve, if it turned, and whether water is still running.
Give the address and a cross street
Include the town and any access details, such as a gate, a stairway or a shared entrance.
While you wait for the plumber
- Close the main water valve if water is spreading
- Stay away from wet outlets and turn off power only if you can reach the panel dry
- Stop using drains if sewage is backing up
- Leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 if you smell gas, before you call us
